Lithothamnium is a red seaweed belonging to the Corallinaceae species. Its thallus is shaped like a several centimetres long miniature tree with branches of a few millimeters. It grows extremely slowly, giving it time to filter and absorb large quantities of sea nutrients, especially calcium and magnesium retained because of its exceptional porousness. It forms reefs several centuries old.
Lithothamnium is harvested throughout the year. It grows on sandy seabeds at a depth of about thirty meters.
